Ten child care workers at the Arcadian Day Care Centre in Duncan have voted to join the B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union to make their work place better.
"On behalf of our 65,000 members, I extend a warm welcome to Arcadian staff," says BCGEU president Darryl Walker. "After exploring a number of options, they joined our organization to help them deal with their top concerns like fair treatment and respect in the workplace."
The child care workers voted unanimously to join BCGEU in a Labour Relations Board-supervised ballot July 24. Walker says the next step will be for the members to form a bargaining committee, decide on their priorities for a first contract, and then begin the negotiating process.
Arcadian is an early learning and care centre with 64 spaces for infants to five-year-olds, and provides drop off services at nearby elementary schools.
BCGEU represents 3,000 early childhood educators and family child care providers across B.C.-more than any other union in the province. Together with the Coalition of Child Care Advocates of B.C., BCGEU is campaigning to promote a universal publicly-funded child care system.
