Cuts to mental health are short-sighted

Yesterday I went to Waddell's Haven Guest Home, a mental health and addictions facility in Mission.

I was there to talk to workers, residents and their families about Fraser Health Authority's recent announcement of the facility's closure. They were in shock after hearing the news last week. Some of the workers have been there for over 15 years.

The residents at Waddell's are mainly older patients who have come from Riverview and Forensic Psychiatry and they are there because they have nowhere else to go.

Waddell's has become a home for the residents. The workers and the residents are a family. And as a family member of one of the residents aptly pointed out, Waddell's is a good home for her sister because she gets the care she needs in a setting that is far from the city and the dangers it presents to the mentally ill.

A reporter from the Mission Record asked me if the provincial government plays any part in the closure of this facility and others that the health authorities have been announcing recently.

Let's make no mistake- the closure of Waddell's, and other homes like it, are a direct result of the government's lack of proper funding for health care and their failure to deliver a workable plan to deal with our society's most vulnerable.

Closing homes like Waddell's Haven and destabilizing the mentally ill is no solution to deal with budget pressures and will end up costing more in the long-term.

Mental Health Cuts

hey, maybe good ol' Gordo will let me move into his fancy mansion when I become homeless from losing my Semi-Independent Rent Subsidy.

cutbacks in fraser health

I served on an inquest jury into the death of a mentally ill man with drug problems at a fraser health hospital. The jury made 42 recommendations and increasing mental health services was one of them. As usual fraser health has ignored recommendations and gone in the opposite direction. Lets be under no illusions, health authorities are shell companies so the bc liberals can abdicate their responsibilities. And they are doing it in their own ridings. Shows the absolute contempt they have for the citizens of bc.

Budget Cuts/Pressures

I am appalled at the budget cuts the Provincial Government is making in the site of our looming recession. Those citizens who are vulnerable and already struggling to come to terms with how they are going to survive the impending economical recession are once again expected to give up a little more to ensure we as a province can financially survive. Why is it that those who have the least are always expected to give up so much. If as a province things are as bad as they say, why are we putting so much money into an Olympic event that most taxpayers will not benefit from. For all the money spent on an event that will last for such a short time and cost millions to run, can we not spend these funds where the benefits would be more benificial. I would also like to know what our politicians will be sacrificing to help we as a government get through the recession. I as a taxpayer would like for once those making the decisions to dip deeper into their personal pockets to assist their citizans ride out the recesion.
