Vancouver Island woman heads to the finish line in A Million Steps for Child Care run
Arriving Tuesday, October 16, 1pm at the Legislature
Families and child care supporters are invited to cheer Shelagh Germyn on to the finish line Tuesday, October 16 in Victoria, as she completes her A Million Steps for Child Care run from Campbell River. The goal of her week-long marathon effort has been to raise awareness of the urgent need for a quality, affordable universal early learning and child care system for BC’s and Canada’s children and families.
Victoria-area residents are invited to join Germyn for the last stretch of her run on October 16. Meet at 12:30pm at the Longhouse at the corner of Belleville and Douglas and walk, bike, jog, or push strollers to arrive at the Legislature at 1pm.
Colourful banners created at community events along the way will be displayed at a final celebration rally at the Legislature. Speakers will include runner Shelagh Germyn, Child Care – Let’s Make It Happen! campaign representative Stephanie Seaman, child care provider Meagan Brame, Parents for Child Care representative Michelle Kirby, and others.By the time she reaches the steps of the Legislature, Germyn will have covered approximately 265 kilometres over seven days.
Earlier this year, Germyn saw a local town hall meeting on the effects of provincial and federal child care funding cuts. She explains that she was so touched by the stories of parents and their struggles to find and afford child care that she decided to do this run to raise awareness about the need for more public child care funding.
