New public service layoffs announced
The BCGEU reacted with disappointment over today's announcement by the provincial government that another 135 BCGEU members will be scheduled for layoff in the coming months.
The information comes in a bulletin to the public service from Alan Seckel, the Deputy Minister to the Premier.
"Contrary to the promises of the previous deputy minister of the public service that no further job cuts would happen this fiscal year, we now learn that 135 BCGEU members were notified today that their jobs were being eliminated," said Darryl Walker, BCGEU president.
The reductions come from the Ministry of Forests and Range and the Ministry of Citizens' Services, with the bulk of the reductions coming from Shared Services B.C., an agency of the Ministry of Citizens' Services.
The union has been in discussion with the Public Service Agency to determine further details on the specific individuals and classifications that are impacted.
It appears that the bulk of the impact will take place in the Capital Region.
"I've asked the Article 29 committees in both of these ministries to work hard to help members get through this difficult time," said Walker.
"The cuts come at a critical time as the BCGEU and the government are at the bargaining table," said Walker. "Today's announcement underscores the importance of improving the job security provisions of the collective agreement."
"B.C. has one of the leanest public services and we won't sign a new collective agreement without improved employment security provisions. I am concerned that these layoffs are cutting these important ministries to the bone and increasing staff workloads."
Members should check the union's website regularly for any updates.
