May 3-9 is Mental Health Week
May 3-9 marks the Canadian Mental Health Association's (CMHA) 58th Mental Health Week. The theme for this year is "Building Your Mental Health, One Support at a Time." It focuses on the supports that help us maintain our peace of mind, such as family and friends, stable housing, work and income.
"Our union is proud to represent front-line mental health and addictions workers across the province," said Darryl Walker, BCGEU president. "They provide critical supports for people struggling to stay healthy, in the face of job loss, a high cost of living, and community services that are being cut."
"We know that there are real social determinants of our health," said Walker. "That is why we join others in calling for an increased minimum wage, affordable housing, and government investment in social services like child care."
Walker also called on the Minister of Health Kevin Falcon to act on its promise to deliver a comprehensive mental health plan for B.C. "This government has committed to setting out a ten-year plan for how to improve mental health in B.C., yet is two years late on this promise. Meanwhile, health authorities are cutting services, laying off staff, and closing facilities for people struggling with mental illness and addictions. Where is the plan?"
"Mental health awareness begins with all of us," said Walker. "The CMHA has some valuable suggestions about how we all can build the supports for mental health in our lives. I urge each of you to take the time to reflect on what you can do for yourselves and your loved ones."
