Nicaragua: Maria Elena Cuadra Movement for Employed and Unemployed Women (MEC)

  • helps organize and empower women to deal with discrimination in the family, the workplace and society in general;
  • has had significant success winning legal protections for women workers in Nicaragua's maquila factories-modern day sweatshops owned by multinationals.


Honduras: Honduran Women's Collective (CODEMUH)

  • CODEMUH provides training programs on labour rights, domestic violence, and health and safety;
  • CODEMUH campaigned successfully to amend that country's labour code to strengthen health and safety protections for women workers in maquilas.


El Salvador: Salvadorean Association for Community Health and Social Services (APSIES)

  • APSIES offers a variety of programs including health promotion, community development and prevention of domestic violence in rural areas in El Salvador where they are not available.


Colombia: NOMADESC

  • NOMADESC is the Spanish acronym for Social Research and Action Association, which is focused on human rights in Colombia.

 

Africa

Ethopia: Partners in the Horn of Africa

  • Partners is a Canadian-based NGO that focuses on infrastructure improvement, health and welfare and women's anti-poverty projects in Ethiopia, much of its work is in rural areas.

Africa: Stephen Lewis Foundation

  • The Stephen Lewis Foundation supports community-based organizations that are turning the tide of HIV/AIDS in Africa;
  • It focuses on funding programs that care for women who are ill, helps orphans and AIDS-affected children, and supports grandmothers who care for their orphan grandchildren.

 

Asia

Burma: Burma Labour Solidarity Organization

  • The organization provides support for Burmese workers to protect their rights and living standards in a country ruled by a ruthless military dictatorship for more than 40 years. The BCGEU helps fund a workers' safe house for organizing and training initiatives.


India: ACORN International Waste-Pickers Organizing Project

  • Acorn is working to help thousands of waste-pickers and informal garbage recyclers in India's capital organize to improve wages and conditions.
